Getting started... remove the upper cowling, and the gauge unit. Also remove the whole front brake assembly. Now's the time to rebuild those calipers if needed.

Get rid of the upper cowling bracket.

Put the front up on some kind of stand or support it some other way.

It actually stabilized the whole thing much more if I put the rear on stands too.

I also put a lift under the bike too... you can't be too careful!

Get rid of the front wheel.

My pooches keeping me company, and helping keep my porch warm! It was cold when I did this, and I didn't have a space heater.

That's Rocko in the front, and Zoe in the back with her head up.

Take off the clipons...

and tuck them out of the way so you can keep all the cables and wires where they should be... cables can bind when turning if not routed properly.

Remove the fork drain screw at the bottom of the leg -- note, aparently some years don't have this drain screw. Pump the legs up and down to get most of the old fork oil out.

Looks good, eh?

Now, in order to remove the damper rods, I had to make this tool. I bought two 5" bolts with 15/16" heads, a 12" extension rod, and two couplers. I had to drill and bolt it all together so I could use it without it unscrewing.

Damper tool, fully assembled. It needs to be at least 20" long.

Unscrew the slider cap while everything is still in the triple tree, being cautious that the springs don't try to sping out. Use a rag to hold onto the cap as you unscrew it. Pull out the springs and finally unbolt the legs from the triple tree and remove them.

Here are all the pieces for one leg, including the speedo gear.

This is the damper rod...

and this is how the tool fits in... you stick the damper tool down the slider, and use a rachet to turn it.
